China's shipyards dominate the global ship repair market
Clarkson's shipyard rankings are based on the 2018 special survey of ships with records. These data also show the number of units inspected, refurbished and/or modified. Clarkson's database covers 600 shipyards worldwide. Among them, Shanghai cosco shipping heavy industry has become the world's busiest repair yard, completed 115 special inspection last year. In second place was dubai dry dock world, which completed 110 special inspections. China merchants heavy industries (shenzhen) ranked third, completing 103 special inspections. These three repair yards are also the only repair yards with more than 100 special inspections last year. According to the international shipping network, in accordance with the requirements of the classification society, in order to maintain the classification of ships that have been classified, relevant inspection must be carried out according to the regulations of the classification society. The special inspection of hull and turbine (including electrical equipment) is usually carried out once every five years to maintain the validity of the classification certificate. According to the data, the top 10 repair yards are Shanghai cosco Marine heavy industry, dubai dry dock world, China merchants heavy industry (shenzhen), China resources dadong, fujian huadong shipyard, shanchuan heavy industry, xinya shipyard, Besiktas shipyard, longshan shipyard and wanbang yongyue. Mr Clarkson points to a 65 per cent increase in tonnage and a 25 per cent increase in the number of ships operating globally compared with a decade ago, not only as a bigger potential market for shipyards but also for suppliers looking to offset the decline in new ships by expanding their services and after-sales operations. Meanwhile, the refit of waste gas scrubbers and ballast water treatment systems has brought more and more business to the shipyards. According to clarkson, 53 per cent of all shipyard activity last year was related to green equipment upgrades. According to clarkson's statistics, there will be more than 3,000 ships refit exhaust scrubbing equipment, and the downtime required for refit will reduce the available supply of container ships by 1%, the available fleet of crude oil ships by 1.4%, and the available fleet of bulk carriers by 0.5% in 2019. There are also a few LNG fuel modifications. Clarkson's ship-repair data also reveal some important refurbishment markets. Over the past decade, clarkson has recorded more than 650 renovations of cruise ships, with Grand Bahama topping the list with 35 special inspections and renovations in 2018. In addition, refitting activities in the FPSO market are also expected to increase. |
