Yichang Damen Shipyard built the first LNG refueling ship and delivered it into operation
The Optimus, a 6,000-m3 LNG supply vessel built by Damen Shipyard in Yichang for Elenger, an Estonian energy company, was recently put into operation, becoming the first LNG refuelling vessel in the Gulf of Finland. It is understood that the Optimus is 100 m long, transported in two 3,000 cubic meters of cargo tanks with refueling, and will load 6,000 cubic meters of LNG in two C-tanks at -163°C. It is designed to meet the requirements of ice class 1A certification at high latitudes and receives the green ship symbol. The ship is equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system, which will be used in conjunction with gas burners to manage vaporized gas (BOG), and provides high-quality accommodation for the crew inside the ship. The ship is classed by Veritas, equipped with dual fuel engines, which can meet the highest emission standards of the European Union. It is a new generation of energy-saving and environmentally friendly ship. Through clean energy applications and design optimization, the ship has achieved a 50% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to the previous generation of ships, and has achieved outstanding performance in terms of fuel consumption, transportation efficiency and meeting new environmental regulations. The ship also meets ICE 1A ICE class requirements and IMO TierIII emission standards. Damen's LGC 6000 LNG supply vessel is designed for fast and safe refuelling operations in all weather conditions, whether in port or offshore. Efficient refueling is particularly important for personnel carriers, roll-on/roll-off ships and passenger roll-on ships with short turnaround time. It is essential to provide good and efficient service to customers. Optimus provides a mobile and efficient ship-to-ship refuelling service that is expected to accelerate the widespread adoption of LNG as a cleaner alternative fuel in the Baltic Sea. With this vessel, Elenger will be able to significantly expand its LNG distribution business in the Baltic Region. Elenger, the largest gas company in Estonia, has been supplying gas to the LNG-powered passenger roller "Megastar" of ferry company Tallink Group for the past five years using a number of specialist trucks. Megastar will be one of the first vessels to benefit from the commissioning of Optimus, which will be able to refuel the ship in a single, efficient and fast procedure while the ship is docked regularly to load and unload passengers and vehicles. The same refuelling volume would require 11 trucks to complete a single operation, and local ports would be spared the additional road traffic costs associated with trucking LNG. In addition, Elenger has agreements with other customers to supply LNG fuel to other vessels such as general cargo, container ships, cruise ships and tankers. Tallink also plans to deploy its new LNG-powered passenger roll-off vessel MyStar next spring. |
