Damen teamed up with MAN to refit Europe's first LNG dual-fuel dredger
The Damen Shipyard Group recently signed an agreement with MAN to use the MAN 35/44DF engine to power its modified European first LNG and marine light diesel (MGO) dual-fuel dredger.
The “Samuel de Champlain” dredger to be modified by Damen will be the first dredger in Europe to be dual-fuel-powered, as part of an EU-supported initiative to promote the operation of the Atlantic coast of Europe. Short-haul ships use LNG propulsion.
The "Samuel de Champlain" is an 8500 m3 suction dredger, 117 m long, owned by Rouenbased GIE Dragages-Ports and operated by the port of Saint-Nazaire in Nantes.
The modification of the "Samuel de Champlain" included the replacement of the original diesel-electric MGO combustion propulsion system with three MAN 6L35/44DF dual-fuel engines, as well as the installation of LNG storage facilities on board.
Damen project manager Louis-Marie Rouxel said: "The main reason for choosing MAN is the performance of its highly competitive 35/44DF engine in response to load shocks. The unique requirements of dredgers require the engine to withstand large loads, we The results of the study show that this is the engine that best meets these parameters."
Lex Nijsen, director of four-stroke marine sales at MAN Energy Solutions, said: "This is an important moment for European shipping. The support provided by the EU is proof. This transformation is only the beginning. It will build a comprehensive LNG infrastructure throughout the European continent. In pursuit of more efficient propulsion and cleaner emissions, I am pleased that the MAN 35/44DF engine is considered to meet the demanding standards required by the dredger industry and a wider range of projects."
