Posco Steel successfully mass-produces marine scrubber steel
South Korea's Pohang Steel has successfully mass-produced high-alloy steel, which is essential for marine sulfur oxide scrubber systems.
According to strict IMO regulations, ships need to remove sulfur and harmful emissions. In the next 5 years, sulfur oxide scrubbers will be used in more than 12,000 ships worldwide.
After extensive research and research and development, Posco has successfully mass produced S31254, a high-alloy stainless steel that can be used in seawater.
According to Posco, the steel contains high levels of molybdenum and nitrogen, which have high strength, high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to conventional stainless steel.
This type of steel has been supplied to manufacturers of marine sulphur oxide scrubber systems such as Hyundai Heavy Industries Power Systems, Kangrim Heavy Industries and STI.
Before 2018, local companies in South Korea have been plagued by supply chain problems because sulphur oxide scrubbers are only produced in several overseas steel mills.
However, the localization of Posco has shortened the delivery time, reduced the price burden and stabilized the material supply. An official of Posco said, "We will provide solutions such as welding training for customers who have low experience in using high alloy steel."
