Japanese shipbuilder to build world's first LNG-powered large-scale coal carrier
Merchant shipping Mitsui and Japan Post have signed a long-term transportation agreement with Kyushu Electric Power to order two LNG-powered large coal carriers for delivery in the second quarter of 2023 for transporting coal from overseas regions such as Australia to Kyushu Power in Kumamoto and Chang Saki's thermal power station. The two new ships are approximately 235 meters long and 38 meters wide, with a deadweight of 95,000 tons. The first of these will be operated by Japan Post and will be built on Oshima, with delivery scheduled for April 2023. The second vessel will be operated by Merchant Marine Mitsui, built in Naimura, and scheduled to be delivered in June 2023. The LNG fuel used by the coal carrier will be provided by the Kyushu Electric Power subsidiary's base in Kitakyushu. After using LNG fuel, carbon dioxide emissions will be about 30% lower than that of ordinary coal carriers of the same type. Due to the large amount of carbon dioxide emitted, coal-fired thermal power generation became the object of criticism at the 25th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25). Japanese companies hope to reduce the environmental load by improving transportation methods. "At present, the global environment is improving environmental protection standards, and by changing the marine fuel to LNG, we can contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society," said Kyushu Electric Power President Ikebe Kazuhiro. |
