Red Star Shipyard begins construction of second ARC7 icebreaker LNG carrier
The new vessel, owned by SMART LNG, a joint venture subsidiary of Russian energy giant Novatek and Russian shipping company Sovcomflot, is one of 14 ICE breaking LNG vessels ordered by SMART LNG at Red Star Shipyard. Together with the first vessel previously ordered by Sovcomflot, the 15 LNG vessels will serve Novatek's Arctic LNG export project Arctic LNG 2. The new ARC7 ice-breaking LNG carrier design will enable year-round sailing on the Northern Sea Route (NSR), including the eastern section, to accelerate the implementation of Russia's plan to increase the volume of cargo on the Northern Sea Route. Compared with the 14 Yamal LNG icebreaker vessels built by Daewoo Shipbuilding, the new LNG vessels built by Red Star Shipyard will have stronger ice-breaking capability and handling characteristics. Evgeniy Ambrosov, Vice Chairman of Novatek's Management Board, said, "The construction of a new generation of Arctic ice-class LNG fleet for Arctic LNG 2 at Red Star Shipyard will enable the localization of Russian technology for the construction of high-tonnage high-tech vessels. All the ARC7 ice-breaking LNG vessels ordered at Red Star Shipyard will fly Russian flags and be fully manned by Russian crew." Deliveries of 15 LNG vessels from the Arctic LNG 2 project are scheduled to begin in 2023, with the Russian Register of Shipping (RS) overseeing the construction process and the Russian Foreign Economic Bank (VEB) financing. With these 15 state-of-the-art icebreaker LNG vessels, Arctic LNG 2's LNG cargoes can be shipped year-round to the Asia-Pacific region along the Northern Sea Route. The 300-meter-long, 48.8-meter-wide LNG carrier, with a cargo compartment capacity of 172,600 cubic meters, will be LNG-based. Its power plant will be 45 megawatts, equivalent to that of a nuclear-powered icebreaker, and can safely transport LNG while breaking ice as thick as 2.1 meters in temperatures of minus 52 degrees Celsius. These LNG vessels will use GTT's Mark III cargo containment system and meet all requirements stipulated by the Russian Federation.
It is understood that Red Star Shipyard is Russia's largest shipbuilding group. A group of Russian companies led by Rosneft was established by relying on the Far East Ship Repair and Construction Center (FESRC) located in Grand Kamen. Arctic LNG 2's icebreaker makes Red Star the first Russian shipyard to build a large LNG carrier and the second shipyard in the world to build the ARC7 icebreaker after Daewoo's shipbuilding. |
