Another 12? CAFI will return to China to order LNG - powered 10,000-container ships
Since the end of last year, the new shipbuilding market container ship orders have exploded, the cumulative order has broken 100. After two shipyards under China State Shipbuilding Group secured orders for 13 16000TEU container ships from Mediterranean Lines yesterday, CAFC, another shipping giant, is speeding up its order and is expected to return to China's shipyards to order up to 12 LNGC-powered 10,000-container ships in the near future. CMA has been actively promoting the use of LNG fuel in the shipping industry. CAFI has 12 LNG-powered container ships in operation and will expand its LNG-powered fleet to 32 ships by 2022, according to ShipNet International. The use of LNG technology is one of the first steps CAFI has taken to achieve its goal of "2050 carbon neutral". CMAC's order will also be the first LNG-powered container ship order for a Chinese ship company in more than a year. As many as 28 of the 30 LNG-powered container ships ordered so far last year have been from South Korea's three major carriers, according to Clarkson. Only Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group won an order for two 14, 000TEU dual-fuel container ships from Hong Kong ship investment firm Tiger Group in February. In addition to the LNG-powered vessels from Jiangnan Shipbuilding and Hudong Zhonghua, CTAC is reportedly planning to order 5+5 5500TEU Panamax container ships from the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and Qingdao Beishuanshi Heavy Industry, with a total value of about US $1.2 billion. The new ships are expected to be delivered in 2023. If the order is finalised, it will be the first time BSIC has built a container ship. CTAC's fleet currently operates 556 container ships with a total capacity of 3,014,33 TEU, accounting for about 12.4% of the market and ranking fourth in the world in terms of capacity, according to Alphaliner. In addition, CTAC has 23 hand-held orders, totaling 354,024 TEU. If the hand-held orders are added, CTAC's shipping capacity will overtake that of COSCO Shipping Group, currently ranked third in the world, and regain the third position in the world. It is reported that CAFI made a net profit of $1.755 billion in 2020, compared with a loss of $229 million in 2019. Among them, the shipping segment operating revenue of $24.23 billion, up 4% year on year. EBITDA was $5.5 billion, up 71.1% from a year earlier, and net profit was $1.86 billion. As of the end of March, new shipbuilding orders for container ships have exceeded 2 million TEU so far in 2021, according to the International Ship Network. Most of those orders were confirmed in recent weeks. New shipbuilding orders in the first quarter of 2021 have also climbed to their highest level in recent years and are growing at their fastest pace in nearly a decade. |
