Twelve more feeder ships! Wan Hai Shipping Shipbuilding
On June 28, Wan Hai Shipping announced that in order to improve operation performance and service level, it ordered 12 3055TEU container ships from Japan Shipbuilding Union (JMU) and Nihon Shipyard, at a cost of 5.07 to 5.4 billion yen (about 46 to 49 million US dollars) for each ship. The total transaction value is between 60.84 billion yen and 64.8 billion yen ($549 million to $585 million), and the price includes the amount of ship upgrading equipment. Wanhai Shipping said the contract was signed on the same day and delivery of the container ships will begin at the end of July 2023. The main purpose of this new ship is to adjust the fleet and market development, enhance operational competitiveness, and provide customers with a more convenient service network. Industry sources pointed out that the price of Wan Hai's order was low, with industry estimates for a container ship of this size around $51 million due to rising steel costs. Since the beginning of this year, Wanhai Shipping has ordered as many as 25 ships in just five months, with a total value of more than $2 billion.
