Twelve more feeder ships! Wan Hai Shipping Shipbuilding
On June 28, Wan Hai Shipping announced that in order to improve operation performance and service level, it ordered 12 3055TEU container ships from Japan Shipbuilding Union (JMU) and Nihon Shipyard, at a cost of 5.07 to 5.4 billion yen (about 46 to 49 million US dollars) for each ship. The total transaction value is between 60.84 billion yen and 64.8 billion yen ($549 million to $585 million), and the price includes the amount of ship upgrading equipment. Wanhai Shipping said the contract was signed on the same day and delivery of the container ships will begin at the end of July 2023. The main purpose of this new ship is to adjust the fleet and market development, enhance operational competitiveness, and provide customers with a more convenient service network. Industry sources pointed out that the price of Wan Hai's order was low, with industry estimates for a container ship of this size around $51 million due to rising steel costs. 
According to the international shipping network, JMU is a long-term partner of Wan Hai Shipping. In November 2018, Wanhai Shipping had ordered eight 3036TEU container ships at JMU, named as "good fortune, bright and beautiful". They have been in service since 2020. The last ship, Wan Hai 329, just launched its maiden voyage at the beginning of this month. Since the beginning of this year, Wanhai Shipping has ordered as many as 25 ships in just five months, with a total value of more than $2 billion. With the latest 12 orders, the total number of 10,000 Sea Shipping orders for the first half of the year has risen to 37, with a total value of about $2.6 billion. In addition to regional ships, Wanhai Shipping has ordered as many as 13 13000TEU class new Panamax container ships this year, all built by South Korean shipping companies, which is the largest ship in its fleet, but also its first order of new Panamax container ships. Among them, at the end of March, Wanhai Shipping ordered the first five 13200TEU container ships from Hyundai Heavy Industry. In the middle of May, Wanhai Shipping purchased four 13100TEU container ship resale ships from Samsung Heavy Industry. Data from Alphaliner shows that at present, the fleet of Wan hai Shipping operates a total of 147 ships, including 86 self-owned ships and 64 chartered ships, with a total capacity of 6,124,24TEU, which is only slightly ahead of Star Shipping and ranks the 10th in the world. In addition, Wanhai Shipping has 34 new ships under construction, with a total capacity of 224,898TEU, accounting for 54.5% of the existing fleet, which ranks the highest among the world's top ten container shipping companies. It is reported that the revenue of Wanhai in May is 15.191 billion Taiwan dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 188.63%, hitting a record high; The cumulative revenue of the first five months was 68.746 billion yuan, with an annual increase of 140.15%. In order to strengthen the layout of the route between Asia and America, wanhai will open the route from Asia to the east of the United States for the first time on June 18, with 10 2800 ~ 4,000 TEU container ships, which will sail from Taipei port for the first time. And the first voyage from Taipei port, not only to provide customers with more loading and unloading port choice, and shorten the transportation time, in order to meet the needs of customers. Shares of Wanhai, which broke the NT $300 mark yesterday, opened at a new high of NT $314.5 this morning on the back of orders. Wanhai's market capitalization increased to NT $665.49 billion, making it one of the top 10 power stocks in Taiwan. |
