France's CMA CGM continues to order ships to expand capacity, but this time it chose to give orders to South Korean shipbuilders instead of working with its "old friend" Chinese shipyards.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on Sept. 16 that it has received an order for six LNG dual-fuel container ships from A European ship owner for a total contract value of 841.2 billion won ($719 million). Equipped with a variety of energy-saving and emission reduction devices and the new generation of smart ship solution SVESSEL, the container ship is expected to be delivered to ship owners by November 2024 at a cost of about $119.8 million per ship.

Samsung Heavy Industries did not disclose details about the ship's owner. However, the order will be made by CMA CGM Ships, which will have a capacity of about 7,000 TEU each and will be equipped with a gTT-designed 6,000-cubic meter thin film LNG bunkers, sources said.

With the addition of Samsung Heavy's latest six vessels, CMA CGM's current number of hand-held vessels will increase to 28. Cma CGM currently operates a fleet of 539 vessels, including 152 owned and 387 leased, with a total capacity of about 3.027m TEU, narrowly ahead of CoSCO Shipping for third place, according to Alphaliner. In addition, cMA CGM has 49 new vessels under construction, totalling about 552,000 TEU, with orders in hand accounting for about 18.2% of the current fleet.

If confirmed, it would be the first time in the past few years that CMA CGM has placed an order for its own medium and large container ships in South Korea. Previously, CMA ships chose to build its own ships in the shipyards of China State Shipbuilding Corporation. In November 2017, CMA CGM ordered nine LNG-powered 23000TEU container ships, which were the largest LNG-powered ships in the shipping industry at that time, five of which were built by Hundong Zhonghua and four by Jiangnan Shipbuilding.

In March 2019, CSSC and CMA CGM signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement and a construction contract for 10 15000TEU VLCS. Five ships from Jiangnan Shipbuilding will operate on LNG, while five from Hudong Zhonghua will be equipped with desulphurization devices and run on traditional fuels.

In April this year, hudong Zhonghua shipbuilding co., LTD., Jiangnan Shipbuilding Co., LTD., and Qingdao Beichuan Heavy Industry Co., LTD jointly accepted 22 container ships of CGM TYPE 3, including 6 15000TEU dual fuel ships of Jiangnan Shipbuilding co., LTD., 6 13000TEU dual fuel ships of Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co., LTD., and 10 5500TEU conventional power container ships of Qingdao Beichuan Heavy Industry Co., LTD. It refreshed the record of largest single container ship order in the history of China's shipbuilding industry.

Samsung Heavy Industries, on the other hand, has mainly built 10,000-box ships such as the New Panama model in recent years, but has never built a ship less than 10,000 TEU. The last time Samsung heavy delivered a container ship below 10,000 teu was in 2015-2016, when it delivered six 9300TEU class vessels, according to clarkson's data.

This brings the total number of new ship orders for Samsung Heavy to 60 this year, worth $7.8 billion. Samsung Heavy is on track to meet its target of $9.1 billion in orders this year ahead of schedule, given the large LNG tanker projects it is negotiating with Russia and others.

As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) continues to enforce new regulations on environmental protection, orders for environment-friendly ships such as LNG dual-fuel power ships, which Samsung Has a strong position in, are increasing significantly, which will help the company meet its annual order target ahead of schedule.

"We have the world's only shipbuilding and offshore LNG integrated demonstration facility, and we have differentiated our products and technologies in the LNG fuel-powered ship sector to enhance our competitiveness for orders," a Samsung Heavy Industry source said. "We plan to establish a cooperative system to develop lnG-related equipment and domesticate it to further enhance product competitiveness."

Samsung Heavy Industries has won 44 container ships out of 60 new orders this year. LNG carriers followed, reaching 9; Crude oil carriers ranked third with seven. It is worth mentioning that 29 of the 60 new ships that Samsung Heavy Industries has undertaken this year, or 48%, are environmentally friendly.
