Thirty more? Russia to build world's strongest LNG fleet
At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2021 (SPIEF), Yevgeny Ambrosov, director of offshore operations, shipping and logistics for Russian energy giant Novatek, announced that Novatek will have a fleet of 65 LNG vessels by 2026. That is almost four times the size of Novatek's current fleet. Ambrosov said it would be the strongest LNG fleet in the world. "Qatar's fleet may be bigger in terms of numbers, but Novatek's fleet will be the strongest in terms of value, complexity and capability." He stressed that the vast majority of the LNG fleet will be built in Russia. Novatek currently operates 15 Arc7 icebreaker LNG vessels to transport LNG cargoes for its Arctic Yamal LNG project. In addition, Novatek has 21 icebreaker LNG vessels under construction at shipyards in South Korea and Russia. Novatek needs to order about 30 more ships, based on its target of 65. At a cost of about $300 million per icebreaker, the order value would be close to $9 billion. Russian Red Star Shipyard (Zvezda) will be the biggest winner of Novatek's fleet expansion plans. Red Star, the first Russian shipyard ever to build a large LNG carrier, will build 15 icebreaker LNG vessels for Novatek's Arctic LNG export project Arctic LNG 2, which will be delivered under the Russian flag starting in 2023. 
Red Star Shipyard has selected South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries as its technical partner to help build the Arctic LNG 2 LNG carrier. Under the agreement, Red Star will initially focus on low-tech construction projects such as hulls and general equipment. Of the 15 LNG tankers, Samsung Heavy will be responsible for the construction of the first five, and the steel pretreatment and cutting of the last 10 tankers. The substructure of the hull will also be made at Samsung Heavy's Juji Shipyard. In addition to Red Star and Samsung Heavy Industries, Novatek built and ordered an additional six Arc7 ice-breaking LNG carriers in Daewoo, South Korea, in October last year at a cost of about US $262 million each. This is the first time Daewoo Shipbuilding has built an LNG vessel for Novatek, following the first order of 15 icebreaker LNG vessels for the Yamal LNG project in 2014. Compared to the Yamal LNG project's 15 vessels, Novatek's new generation ARC7 icebreaker design ensures year-round sailing on the Northern Sea Route (NSR), including the eastern section, thus accelerating the implementation of Russia's plan to increase the volume of cargo on the Northern Sea Line. With these state-of-the-art icebreaker LNG vessels, Arctic LNG 2 LNG cargoes can be shipped year-round to the Asia-Pacific region along the Northern Sea Route. |
