Platform Moon! Samsung Heavy Industries delivered the world's second largest FLNG
A naming ceremony was held in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province on November 15 for the delivery of the Floating liquefied natural gas vessel (FLNG) built by Samsung Heavy Industries for Coral Sul project off mozambique. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his wife Kim Jung-sook attended the ceremony with Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and his wife, and praised the hard work of companies from various countries that jointly built the FLNG.
"The FLNG built by the Korean shipyard will serve as a symbol of friendship and cooperation between the two countries as it is being used for gas production in mozambique's northern waters," President Moon said. We are proud of the strong international competitiveness of Korea s shipbuilding industry, and we will further expand cooperation in energy, shipbuilding, and plants.
Moon said that South Korea is the world's top shipbuilding power, especially in the construction of large container ships, very large oil tankers and other environmentally friendly ships with high added value. Currently, all four large floating LIQUEFIED natural gas (LNG) ships in the world are built by South Korea. South Korea will upgrade core technologies for eco-friendly ships and develop carbon-free ships and smart ships.
The FLNG was named Coral-Sul by the wife of the President of Mozambique after her godmother. The FLNG is the fourth major FLNG to be completed and delivered globally, and the first in Mozambique. It is the second largest single FLNG in the world. Coral-sul FLNG is 432 meters long, 66 meters wide and weighs about 140,000 tons. Construction started in 2018, and the hull part was launched on January 14 last year. Its upper module consists of 12 treatment modules and weighs about 70,000 tons.
FLNG is a mobile complex equipment that produces, refines, stores and loads LNG in floating mode. As a production device from drilling to liquefaction, it does not need to install land liquefaction storage equipment or subsea pipelines, so it has the advantage of protecting the subsea ecosystem
Coral-sul FLNG is part of Italian oil and gas major ENI's Coral South (Coral Sul) project in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin offshore Mozambique, which will produce 450 billion cubic meters of natural gas from mozambique's offshore waters. Production is planned for 2022. Coral-sul is the first EVER FLNG to be deployed in deep water, at a depth of about 2,000 metres, and the first purpose-built FLNG in Africa.
The total value of the CORal-Sul FLNG project is $5.4 billion. In June 2017, Samsung heavy industries won the FLNG project with ReefConsortium, a consortium of France's Technip and Japan's JGC. Samsung Heavy Industries is responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the FLNG and the construction of the upper module under a contract worth about $2.54 billion. Technip and JGC were responsible for engineering and procurement of the upper modules.
Samsung Heavy Industries has so far built three FLNGS including Coral-Sul, the other two being the shell Prelude FLNG valued at $3.6bn and Petronas PFLNG-2 FLNG valued at $1.5bn. As a result, all four FLNGS in the world, including one built by Daewoo Shipbuilding, have been built by Korean shipyards, reaffirming Korea's competitive edge in the FLNG construction market.
Coral-sul will start production in mozambique's Rovuma Basin Area 4, in which Korea Natural Gas Corporation (KOGAS) has a 10 percent stake, starting next year. The company plans to produce 3.4 million tons of LNG per year, or 8.5 percent of Korea's annual LNG consumption.
It is also the fifth time that Moon has visited Geoje, a major shipbuilding city in South Korea, to provide a platform for South Korean shipbuilders, according to south Korean industry insiders. President Moon jae-in visited the construction site of daewoo Shipbuilding's icebreaking LNG ship on Jan. 3, 2018. On September 14 of the same year, President Moon also attended the launching ceremony of Korea's first 3,000-ton submarine (KSS-iii), Dosan Anchangho, as the chief guest of honor at Daewoo Shipbuilding. On April 23, 2020, President Moon jae-in attended the naming ceremony of the world's largest 24,000 TEU super large container ship built by Daewoo Shipbuilding for HMM(former Hyundai Merchant Marine). On September 9 this year, President Moon visited The Geoje Shipyard of Samsung Heavy Industries and delivered a speech at the launch ceremony of k-Shipbuilding Strategy and co-production cooperation.
