Two "Chinese ships" help! The pipe laying of Nord Stream 2 project in Russia is nearing completion
According to Russian media, Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the Nord Stream 2 project, recently announced that the laying of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has been 99% completed, and the pipeline laying vessel Akademik Cherskiy has completed its tasks. Another pipe-laying vessel, Fortuna, is continuing to work in the waters at the end of the project. In early July, Matthias Warnig, CEO of Nord Stream 2 AG, said Nord Stream 2 is expected to be completed by the end of August. The first branch line has been completed, and it will take another two to three months for testing and certification. He noted that "the threat of US sanctions has made our job more difficult in every respect, including certification". The move comes after 18 companies, including Baker Hughes, DNV and AXA Group, the world's largest insurance Group, halted The Nord Stream 2 project to avoid US sanctions. DNV's withdrawal has led to significant limitations in pipeline compliance certification for nord Stream 2. Meanwhile, Warnig revealed that nord Stream 2 could carry hydrogen in the future and is expected to be ready within 10 years. "It seems very realistic that we will be able to mix hydrogen into one or both pipelines at the latest within 10 years," he said. He added that Gazprom was working on various hydrogen technologies. It is understood that "Nord Stream 2" project includes two natural gas branch pipelines from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, with a total length of about 2,400 kilometers, directly connecting Germany and Russia across the Baltic Sea, bypassing Ukraine, to transport Russian natural gas to Germany, and then to other European countries. Capable of delivering at least 55 billion cubic meters of Russian gas a year to the EU for at least 50 years. 
During construction, Nord Stream 2 was opposed by the United States, Ukraine and some European countries. At the end of 2019, when the Nord Stream 2 project was largely completed, the United States announced sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 project, which applied to the companies and pipelay vessels involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. Allseas, the world's largest contractor for the installation and pipeline of offshore oil and gas development platforms, decided to withdraw due to the sanctions. 
The move comes after 18 companies, including Baker Hughes, DNV and AXA Group, the world's largest insurance Group, halted The Nord Stream 2 project to avoid US sanctions. DNV's withdrawal will likely severely limit nord Stream 2's pipeline compliance certification, meaning it may be difficult to get the pipeline started. While the United States has long opposed Nord Stream 2, the Biden administration has concluded that the project is in its final stages and cannot be stopped. In May, the Biden administration decided not to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG and its CHIEF executive Matthias Warnig, both of whom were exempted. The United States recently announced an agreement to end its dispute with Germany, which strongly supports the pipeline. However, both the US and Germany have said they will consider proposals to mitigate the impact of Nord Stream 2 once it is operational, particularly in the case of Ukraine. |
