Cosco Shipping Acquired 35% stake in CTT Terminal of Hamburg port in Germany
China's CoSCO Shipping Group will invest $500 million in the Hamburg Port container terminal, Europe's third largest port, becoming the first non-German operator to acquire Germany's main container gateway terminal. The Tollerort container Terminal serves 18 routes, mostly Feeder routes to Europe, as well as the Ocean Alliance's Asia to Northern Europe NEU3 route (CMA CGM FAL7 and COSCO SHIPPING AEU7), which has a fleet of 10 vessels. The transport capacity is between 13000-19000TEU. HHLA expects the Tollerort container Terminal to become coSCO shipping's preferred transit hub in Europe through the deal, where cargo will be concentrated. In addition, while CoSCO Shipping has an agreed minority stake, the Tollerort container terminal will continue to be open to all customers within the HHLA network. Angela Titzrath, President of HHLA, said that the Tollerort container Terminal handled the first ship from China in 1982 and has become a major docking point for coSCO Shipping's fleet over the years. HHLA and COSCO Shipping will share the common goal of vigorously developing Tollerort container terminal business, and strengthen and promote the connectivity of logistics business between China and Hamburg. Cosco and HHLA first revealed in June that they were in talks to acquire a stake in Tollerort container terminal. At the time, HHAL said it hoped the talks would strengthen relations with Its Chinese partners and provide sustainable planning for the Tollerort container terminal to ensure cargo volumes and jobs in Hamburg's port. Industry analysts said that locking coSCO Shipping's volume at Tollerort container terminal was a key factor in HHLA's decision to participate in the negotiations. Cosco Shipping Ports Co., Ltd. is the world's leading port operator, with a portfolio of terminals covering five major ports in China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, South America and the Mediterranean. Hamburg Port is the largest port in Germany and one of the most important hubs of European trade with China, with abundant rear gathering and distribution facilities. It is also an important European node for China-Europe freight trains. The deal with HHLA will expand Cosco Shipping's fast-growing Business in Europe. It is understood that cosco Shipping's overseas ports are mainly concentrated in the Mediterranean region of Europe, with controlling interests in the Piraeus port of Greece, Valencia port of Spain and Bilbao port of Bilbao and the Container terminal of Zeebrugge port of Belgium. It also has stakes in container terminals at Antwerp in Belgium, Las Palmas in Spain and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Overseas port investment is gradually becoming the top priority of COSCO Shipping's port layout, with the designed annual processing capacity of overseas ports reaching 31.9% of the total. It is known that The port of Hamburg, founded in 1189, is the traditional and most important material transit point in northern Europe and the overseas trade center of the Baltic Sea region. Port of Hamburg is home to four of Germany's most advanced container terminals and three cruise terminals. It is the largest port in Germany and the third largest port in Europe, and the 17th largest container port in the world. With advanced loading and unloading equipment and high degree of mechanization and automation, the port is known as "The gateway of Germany to the world" and "the fastest transshipment port in Europe". Especially in container sea-rail combined transportation, the railway infrastructure supporting the port is well built and the railway transportation efficiency is high. As Germany's largest integrated port, the port of Hamburg saw its maritime cargo throughput increase to 136.6 million tons in 2019, up 1.1%. Container throughput was 9.3 million TEU, up 6.1% year on year. China is still the largest trading partner of the Port of Hamburg.
